Ascea PDF Print E-mail
Ascea (about 95 km from Salerno) is a very important town because in this territory are the Greek ruins of Velia. If you want to go by car, you have to take the highway Salerno-Reggio Calabria, then take the exit Battipaglia and continue along the SS18 direction Vallo della Lucania and exit Vallo Scalo, then follow the signs to “Ascea”; you can go by train as the train line Rome-Naples-Salerno-Reggio Calabria serves the entire coastal area of Salerno’s province and Cilento. You can also reach Ascea by ferry as in summertime the “Metrò del Mare” provides numerous connections along the Campania region Coast and the nearest port is Casalvelino.

Ascea is immersed in the heart of the marvellous Cilento; it is a perfect synthesis of history, culture, sunshine and sandy beaches. It is part of the Cilento traditional area and the maritime touristic port of the municipality is Marina di Ascea. The town is located on the beach. Velia is the Italian name of the ancient town of Elea, originally founded by the Greeks, it is best known as the home of the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, as well as the Eleatic school of which they were part. The site of the Acropolis of ancient Elea was renamed in the Middle Ages “Castellamare della Bruca”. Remains of the city walls, with traces of one gate and several towers, of a total length of over three miles, still exist, and belong to three different periods, in all of which the crystalline limestone of the locality is used. There are some remains of cisterns on the site and various other traces of building.
